Ardra Nakshatra

Ardra means “moist” or “green”, like the earth after rain. In the sky it is the bright reddish star Betelgeuse in Orion. The idea is of a heavy storm that soaks the land, and of the new growth that follows.

Ardra is ruled by Rahu, the planet of ambition, research and the unusual, and it lies in Mercury’s sign Mithuna. That combination produces a quick, restless intellect that wants to understand how things really work.

The deity of Ardra is Rudra, the fierce Vedic form of Lord Shiva, the roarer who brings the storm. The word Rudra is often linked with rud, to weep, and the symbol of Ardra is a teardrop. But Rudra’s storm is also what washes away dust, and he is praised in the Shri Rudram as the healer who carries the best medicines.

So Ardra teaches that pain can clean and renew. People of this star often grow most after a challenge, and come out of it wiser and more compassionate. In South India, Ardra (Thiruvathirai) in the month of Margazhi is celebrated as Lord Nataraja’s festival.
