Ashwini Nakshatra
Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras, spanning 0° to 13°20′ of Mesha (Aries). If the Moon sat here when you were born, Ashwini is your janma nakshatra, and its nature is speed, fresh starts and the instinct to help. Think of a horse at the start line, already moving.

Meaning of Ashwini
The name comes from ashva, horse, and is usually read as “she who owns horses” or “the horsewoman”. Being the very first nakshatra of the zodiac, Ashwini carries the energy of beginnings: the first step, the first try, the first response in an emergency.
The star is ruled by Ketu and sits entirely in Mesha, a fire sign ruled by Mars. Ketu gives detachment and sudden insight; Mars gives courage and drive. Together they produce a person who acts quickly and often knows the answer before they can explain how.
The Ashwini Kumaras and the horse’s head
The deities of this nakshatra are the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin horsemen of the Vedas and physicians of the gods. They are called the sons of Surya and Sanjna, born when Sanjna had taken the form of a mare. In the Rig Veda they arrive at dawn on a swift chariot to rescue sailors, restore sight and give youth back to the old sage Chyavana.
So the horse’s head symbol is not only about speed. It is about help that arrives fast. People born in Ashwini are often the ones who reach a problem first and try to fix it, at home, at work or among friends.
Nature and personality
Ashwini natives are usually energetic, straightforward and young at heart at any age. They dislike waiting, long meetings and roundabout talk. Many have a natural gift for healing, whether as doctors, as caregivers, or simply as the friend whose advice makes you feel better.
The flip side of speed is impatience. Ashwini people may start many things and lose interest once the excitement fades, or take a decision before hearing everyone out. Learning to finish what they begin, and to slow down for the people around them, brings out the best of this star. Their Deva gana adds a generous, open-hearted temperament.
The four padas of Ashwini
Pada 1 (Mesha navamsa): the purest Ashwini, bold and pioneering, with double Mars energy. Good for leadership, sport and anything needing quick action.
Pada 2 (Vrishabha navamsa): steadier and more practical, with an eye for comfort, money and good taste. The speed of Ashwini meets Venus’ patience.
Pada 3 (Mithuna navamsa): curious, talkative and clever with hands and words. Good for communication, trade and learning many skills.
Pada 4 (Karka navamsa): the most caring pada. The healing side of the Ashwini Kumaras is strongest here, along with attachment to home and mother.
Career and money
Ashwini does well wherever speed and courage are valued. Medicine, nursing, ayurveda, physiotherapy, emergency services, the army and police, sports, automobiles, transport and travel are classic fields. Many also enjoy start-ups and new projects, where they can be the first to try something.
With money, Ashwini people earn through effort and initiative rather than slow saving. A little planning, and a trusted partner who handles the details, helps the wealth stay.
Love, marriage and remedies
In love, Ashwini is honest, warm and quick to express feelings, and needs a partner who gives them room to move. In Kundli Milan, Ashwini has horse yoni, which matches very well with another horse yoni, and Vata (Aadi) nadi, so a partner with a different nadi is traditionally preferred. The buffalo is considered the opposite yoni. These are only some of the eight kootas; the full chart always matters more than one factor.
Ashwini is one of the six gandmool nakshatras, because it falls at the junction of a water and a fire sign. Families traditionally do a simple gandmool shanti puja on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to Ashwini. It is a blessing ritual, not a cause for worry. For daily remedies, chant “Om Ashvinibhyam Namah”, worship Lord Ganesha for Ketu, and serve the sick or elderly when you can. Cat’s eye (lehsuniya) is linked with Ketu, but please consult an experienced jyotishi before wearing any gemstone.
