Meaning of Pushya
Pushya comes from push, to nourish or to make strong. It is also called Tishya, the auspicious one, and Sidhya, the one that brings success. Traditional texts call it the king of nakshatras for its gentle, beneficial nature.
Its ruling planet is Saturn (Shani), and it lies in Karka, the Moon’s own sign. Saturn gives patience, discipline and endurance, and the Moon gives feeling and care. The result is love that shows itself through steady duty.
Brihaspati and the cow’s udder
The deity of Pushya is Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, who guides them with wisdom, prayer and good counsel. Pushya people often become the advisors of their families and workplaces, the ones others come to for a calm opinion.
The symbol is the udder of a cow, or a flower or circle. A cow gives milk to her calf and to the whole household without asking for anything back. When Pushya falls on a Thursday it forms Guru Pushya yoga, and on a Sunday Ravi Pushya yoga, days traditionally chosen for buying gold, starting studies and other good beginnings.
Nature and personality
Pushya natives are usually calm, responsible and respectful of tradition. They take care of elders, children and anyone in need, and they work hard without much complaint. Their Deva gana gives them a religious, giving nature and a good name in society.
Saturn’s influence can make them serious, cautious or slow to show feelings, and sometimes too attached to routine. They may give so much that they forget their own needs. Allowing some fun and rest, and accepting help in return, keeps Pushya’s well full.
The four padas of Pushya
Pada 1 (Simha navamsa): dignified and ambitious, with leadership in family or community.
Pada 2 (Kanya navamsa): methodical and service-minded, excellent in work that needs care and accuracy.
Pada 3 (Tula navamsa): balanced and diplomatic, good in partnerships, counselling and the arts.
Pada 4 (Vrishchika navamsa): deep and protective, with interest in spiritual practice, healing and research.
Career and money
Pushya does well in teaching, religious and charitable work, counselling, politics and government, management, banking, dairy, food and agriculture, real estate and caregiving professions like nursing and child care. Its Saturn side suits long-term careers built step by step.
Pushya natives tend to save carefully and invest in land, gold and family security. Wealth usually grows slowly but lasts.
Love, marriage and remedies
In marriage Pushya is devoted, dependable and protective, and builds a stable home. Its love is shown through actions more than words, so a partner who notices quiet care suits it best. Pushya has sheep (goat) yoni, at ease with another sheep yoni and traditionally opposite to the monkey, and Pitta (Madhya) nadi, so a different nadi is preferred. Note that Pushya is usually avoided as a wedding muhurta by tradition; this concerns the date of the wedding, not people born in Pushya.
For remedies, worship Brihaspati or Lord Vishnu on Thursdays and chant “Om Brihaspataye Namah”. For Saturn, recite the Hanuman Chalisa or offer mustard oil on Saturdays, and help the elderly. Blue sapphire (neelam) is linked with Saturn, but consult an experienced jyotishi before wearing any gemstone; it is especially important for this stone.
