Meaning of Mula, its deity and symbol
Mula means ‘root’ and points towards the centre of our galaxy, which lies in this part of the sky. Its deity is Nirriti, the goddess who presides over dissolution and the clearing away of what no longer serves. Nirriti is sometimes feared, but in a wider sense she is the force that uproots the old so that something truer can grow.
Its symbols are a bunch of roots tied together and the elephant’s goad (ankush). Roots hold a tree steady and draw nourishment from deep below; the goad guides a powerful elephant. Together they describe Mula well: a nature that goes deep, and the need to direct great inner force with wisdom.
Nature and personality
Mula natives are sincere, frank and philosophical. Ketu as the nakshatra lord gives a searching, detached mind that is not satisfied with surface answers, and Dhanu’s lord Guru adds faith, generosity and a love of learning. Many Mula people are drawn to medicine, research, spirituality or the study of ancient knowledge.
They can be blunt and may go through phases of sudden change, letting go of old jobs, places or beliefs. As Rakshasa gana, they are determined and independent. When their energy is channelled into a clear purpose, they become excellent investigators, healers and teachers.
The four padas of Mula
Pada 1 (Mesha navamsa, 0°00′–3°20′ Dhanu): energetic, brave and pioneering; this pada sits at the gandmool junction with Jyeshtha.
Pada 2 (Vrishabha navamsa, 3°20′–6°40′ Dhanu): steadier and more grounded, with interest in wealth, food and family traditions.
Pada 3 (Mithuna navamsa, 6°40′–10°00′ Dhanu): curious and communicative, suited to writing, teaching and research.
Pada 4 (Karka navamsa, 10°00′–13°20′ Dhanu): emotional and caring, with strong intuition and devotion to family.
Gandmool and Mula
Mula is one of the six traditional gandmool nakshatras, sitting at the junction of Vrishchika (water) and Dhanu (fire). Older texts discuss its padas in relation to the family, and many households perform a gandmool or Mula shanti puja, usually on the 27th day after birth when the Moon returns to Mula. Think of it as a blessing ceremony. A Mula birth is not a misfortune, and the shanti is done simply so that the child grows with grace and the family feels at ease.
Career, money and marriage
Mula suits research, medicine and herbal healing, pharmacy, investigation, law, philosophy, astrology, agriculture and work connected with land and roots. Ketu can also give technical and computing skill. Money may come with ups and downs early on, but Mula natives who stay patient often build lasting security in mid-life.
In marriage, Mula natives are honest and expect honesty in return. They value a partner who respects their search for meaning. In Kundli Milan, Mula is Rakshasa gana and Vata nadi; its yoni animal is the dog (male), with the deer (Anuradha and Jyeshtha) as the traditional opposite yoni. The complete chart matters more than any single factor.
Remedies for Mula nakshatra
Worship of Goddess Durga or Kali, and of Lord Ganesha, is traditional for Mula. Chanting “Om Nirritaye Namah” honours the deity directly. For Ketu, the nakshatra lord, chanting “Om Kem Ketave Namah”, feeding dogs and offering prayers to Ganesha on Tuesdays are simple practices.
Planting a tree, especially one with deep roots like the banyan or peepal, is a lovely remedy that echoes Mula’s symbol. Cat’s eye (lehsuniya) is linked with Ketu, but consult an experienced jyotishi before wearing it.
