Ashlesha Nakshatra
Ashlesha is the ninth nakshatra, covering 16°40′ to 30° of Karka (Cancer). When the Moon is here at birth, Ashlesha is your janma nakshatra. It is the star of the coiled serpent: deep perception, strong attachment and a mind that misses nothing.

Meaning of Ashlesha
Ashlesha means “the embrace” or “the entwined one”, from shlish, to cling. A serpent wrapped around something holds it tightly and patiently. This is the energy of Ashlesha: it grips, binds and does not let go easily, whether that is a person, an idea or a goal.
The ruling planet is Mercury (Budh), sharp, clever and good with words, placed in Karka, the Moon’s emotional sign. So Ashlesha joins intelligence with intense feeling, and its people often read others’ moods very accurately.
The Nagas and the coiled serpent
The deities of Ashlesha are the Nagas (Sarpas), the serpent beings of the scriptures. Nagas guard treasures and hidden knowledge, and in yoga the coiled serpent is the image of kundalini, the energy sleeping at the base of the spine. Serpents also shed their skin and renew themselves.
Lord Shiva wears a serpent around his neck and Lord Vishnu rests on Sheshnag, which shows that serpent power, when held with wisdom, becomes protective and sacred. In Ashlesha natives, the same power appears as concentration, intuition and the ability to transform.
Nature and personality
Ashlesha natives are intelligent, perceptive and persuasive. They understand people quickly, keep secrets well, and are excellent at strategy. Their loyalty to family and close friends is strong, and they protect what they love.
Their Rakshasa gana (Asura in some tables) gives independence and a guarded nature. They may be slow to trust, sensitive to hurt, or tempted to control situations. Openness with the people closest to them, and channelling their sharp mind into study or spiritual practice, brings out Ashlesha’s healing side.
The four padas of Ashlesha
Pada 1 (Dhanu navamsa): more open and idealistic, interested in philosophy, teaching and travel.
Pada 2 (Makara navamsa): ambitious and calculating, strong in business, administration and long-term planning.
Pada 3 (Kumbha navamsa): unconventional and research-minded, drawn to science, occult studies and groups.
Pada 4 (Meena navamsa): the most intuitive pada, emotional and spiritual, often with healing or psychic ability.
Career and money
Ashlesha excels in fields that need insight and handling of hidden matters: psychology, research, investigation, law, politics, pharmacy and chemistry, ayurveda, astrology, writing and negotiation. Its Mercury nature also suits trading, marketing and diplomacy.
With money they are shrewd and careful, and good at spotting opportunities. Clear agreements and honest dealings keep that sharpness working in their favour.
Love, marriage and gandmool shanti
In relationships Ashlesha is protective and deeply attached, and needs emotional honesty and loyalty in return. Ashlesha has cat yoni, at ease with another cat yoni and traditionally opposite to the rat, and Kapha (Antya) nadi, so a partner of a different nadi is preferred. Rakshasa gana matches traditionally favour another Rakshasa gana or a careful study of the full charts.
Ashlesha is a gandmool nakshatra because it sits at the junction of Karka and Simha, a water and a fire sign. Families usually perform gandmool shanti on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to Ashlesha; it is a calm, routine puja for blessings. Other remedies include Naga worship on Naga Panchami, Sarpa puja, chanting “Om Sarpebhyo Namah” and worship of Lord Vishnu on Wednesdays. Emerald is linked with Mercury, but consult an experienced jyotishi before wearing any gemstone.
