Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra

Uttara Phalguni means “the latter reddish one”, the second half of the Phalguni pair. If Purva Phalguni is the front of the bed where one rests, Uttara Phalguni is the back legs that hold it up. It moves from enjoyment towards responsibility, from romance towards a lasting bond.

Its ruling planet is the Sun (Surya). The first pada lies in Simha, the Sun’s own sign, and the other three in Kanya, Mercury’s practical sign. So Uttara Phalguni joins the Sun’s dignity with Kanya’s careful, helpful nature.

The deity is Aryaman, one of the Adityas, the god of agreements, hospitality, friendship and marriage. In Vedic weddings Aryaman is invoked during the rites, and he is the one who keeps social bonds honest. The Bhagavad Gita says of the ancestors, “Among the Pitris I am Aryaman.”
